We’ve put together this step-by-step guide to help you understand the entire online auction process, from finding your first auction to bringing home your winning items.
1. Finding an Online Auction
The first step is finding an auction that interests you!

Here’s how to get started:

- Browse our current and upcoming auctions.
- Select an auction that interests you.
- Click the “Bid Now” button to visit the online bidding platform.
Each auction has its own catalog, where you can view available items, photographs, descriptions, bidding information, and important auction details.
Helpful Tip: Check our website regularly! New auctions and items are added throughout the year, and you never know what you might find.
2. How to Register for Online Bidding
Before placing your first bid, you’ll need to create a bidder account.
Registration is straightforward and allows you to participate in our online auctions.
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Create an Account
Visit the online bidding platform and select the option to create an account.
Step 2: Enter Your Email Address
Provide a valid email address and complete any required verification steps.
Step 3: Create a Password
Choose a secure password and agree to the platform’s terms and conditions.
Step 4: Complete Your Profile
Enter your contact information, including your name, address, and phone number.
Step 5: Add Payment Information
Provide a valid credit or debit card as required by the bidding platform.
Step 6: Start Exploring!
Once your account is created, you’re ready to browse auctions and register to bid on items that interest you.
Remember that individual auctions may have additional registration requirements or terms.
3. How to Place a Bid and Use Maximum Bidding
One of the biggest advantages of online auctions is that you can bid from virtually anywhere!
How to Place a Bid
Once you’ve found an item you’re interested in:
- Click the item to view its photographs, description, and details.
- Review the current bid and remaining auction time.
- Enter your bid according to the available bidding increments.
- Confirm your bid.
Congratulations! You’re participating in an online auction.
If another bidder places a higher bid, the platform may notify you so you have an opportunity to bid again.
What Is Maximum Bidding?
Don’t want to constantly check an auction to see whether you’re still winning?
That’s where maximum bidding comes in!
A maximum bid is the highest amount you’re willing to pay for an item, excluding applicable fees and taxes.
Instead of immediately bidding your entire maximum amount, the system automatically places bids on your behalf using the required increments.
For example:
Imagine an item currently has a bid of $50, but you’re willing to pay up to $150.
You enter a maximum bid of $150.
The system will automatically bid on your behalf as other bidders participate, up to your $150 limit.
If bidding stops at $85, you may win the item for $85 rather than your full $150 maximum.
Why use maximum bidding?
- You don’t have to monitor the auction constantly.
- The system automatically responds to competing bids.
- You can establish your spending limit ahead of time.
- You only pay the final winning bid, not necessarily your maximum.
Keep in mind that another bidder may have entered an earlier maximum bid, and ties are generally handled according to the bidding platform’s rules.
Our Tip: Decide what an item is worth to you before bidding and set your maximum accordingly.
4. What Does Soft Close Mean in an Online Auction?
If you’ve participated in one of our online auctions, you may have noticed the term “soft close.”
But what exactly does it mean?
A soft close is a feature designed to keep bidding fair and competitive until the very end.
Rather than allowing someone to win simply by placing a bid at the last possible second, the system extends the bidding time when qualifying last-minute bids are received.
Here’s an Example:
An item is scheduled to close at 7:00 PM.
At 6:59:50 PM, another bidder places a bid.
Instead of closing immediately at 7:00 PM, the bidding time is extended by an additional two minutes.
If another bid is placed during the extension period, the timer extends again.
This process continues until the timer expires without another qualifying bid.
The highest bidder at that point wins!
Why do we use soft close?
Soft close gives everyone a fair opportunity to respond to competing bids.
Helpful Tip: Don’t wait until the last few seconds! Place your bids early or use maximum bidding so you don’t miss out.
Soft-close timing and rules can vary by auction, so always review the specific auction terms.
5. Understanding the Buyer’s Premium
When participating in an online auction, it’s important to understand the total cost of your purchase.
One term you’ll frequently encounter is the buyer’s premium.
A buyer’s premium is an additional percentage added to the final winning bid.
Many of our online personal-property auctions charge a 10% buyer’s premium.
How Does It Work?
Let’s say you win an item with a final bid of $100.
Your purchase would be calculated as follows:
Winning Bid: $100.00
10% Buyer’s Premium: $10.00
Subtotal: $110.00
Applicable sales tax and payment processing fees, if any, would be added to determine your final total.
The buyer’s premium and any additional fees will be listed in the auction terms.
Important: Always review the specific auction’s terms and conditions before bidding, as premiums and fees may vary.
6. Why You Should Attend Auction Preview Day
Photographs and descriptions are helpful, but sometimes you want to see an item in person before making a purchase.
That’s exactly why we offer preview opportunities for many of our auctions!
Preview day gives bidders an opportunity to inspect available items before the auction closes.
Why Attend a Preview?
See Items in Person
Get a closer look at the items you’re interested in.
Inspect Their Condition
Evaluate the condition, appearance, and features of an item before deciding how much you’re willing to bid.
Ask Questions
Our team is available during scheduled previews to help answer questions about the auction process and provide available information.
Bid With Confidence
Seeing an item in person can help you make a more informed bidding decision.
Where Can You Find Preview Information?
Preview dates, times, and locations are listed in the individual auction details on our website.
Not every auction has an in-person preview, so be sure to check before making plans.
Our Recommendation: Whenever possible, take advantage of preview opportunities, especially when considering equipment, vehicles, or higher-value purchases.
7. What Happens When You Win an Online Auction?
You’ve found the perfect item, placed your bid, and waited for the auction to close.
Now what?
Step 1: The Auction Closes
Once the bidding timer expires and no additional qualifying bids are received, the item closes.
If you have the highest accepted bid, congratulations! You’ve won the item, subject to any applicable auction terms or seller confirmation requirements.
Step 2: Watch for Your Invoice
Winning bidders typically receive an invoice by email after the auction closes and invoices have been processed.
Your invoice will include your winning purchases, applicable buyer’s premiums, taxes, and other charges.
Step 3: Review Pickup Information
Your invoice and the auction details will provide important pickup information.
Be sure to review the scheduled date, time, and location.
Step 4: Plan Ahead
Make arrangements to pick up your purchases during the designated pickup window.
Depending on the size and type of items you’ve purchased, you may need a truck, trailer, or additional help with loading.
Helpful Tip: Check your email after the auction closes, including your spam or junk folder, so you don’t miss important information.
8. Everything You Need to Know About Pickup Day
Pickup day is when you finally get to take home your winning items!
At Hamele Auction Services, we work to make the pickup process as organized and convenient as possible.
When Is Pickup?
For many of our online auctions, pickup takes place the day after the auction closes.
However, dates, times, and locations vary.
Always review the specific auction details before bidding to ensure you can make the scheduled pickup.
Where Do I Pick Up My Items?
Pickup locations are listed in the auction information and on your invoice.
Some auctions take place at our Portage location, while others may require pickup at a different property or location.
What Payment Methods Are Accepted?
Depending on the auction, accepted payment methods may include:
- Cash
- Check
- Credit or debit card
Card payments may include an additional processing fee. Review the auction terms for accepted payment methods and applicable charges.
Do I Need to Bring Help?
Yes, if you’ve purchased large or heavy items!
Buyers should arrive prepared with the appropriate vehicle, trailer, equipment, and assistance needed to safely load and transport their purchases.
Loading assistance may be available at certain auctions, but it should never be assumed.
Our Tip: Review the pickup requirements before placing your bids. Planning ahead makes the entire experience easier!
9. Do Online Auctions Offer Shipping?
Some of our online auctions offer shipping, allowing bidders from outside the immediate area to participate.
However, shipping is not available for every auction or every item.
Always confirm shipping availability before bidding.
How Does Auction Shipping Work?
Step 1: Complete Payment
After the auction closes, your purchases must be paid for according to the auction’s payment instructions.
Step 2: Items Enter the Shipping Process
Eligible items are transferred for packing and shipping preparation.
Step 3: Allow Time for Processing
Shipping preparation generally takes approximately 7–10 business days, although timing may vary depending on the auction and items.
Step 4: Receive Your Shipping Invoice
Once your items have been prepared for shipment, you’ll receive a separate invoice for shipping charges through Shipping Saint.
Step 5: Pay Your Shipping Invoice
After the shipping invoice is paid, your items can be shipped!
Shipping costs are separate from the winning bid and may include packing, handling, and carrier charges.
Important: Check the auction terms carefully to confirm whether shipping is available and whether the items you’re interested in qualify.
